To understand the health of a forest, conservation workers typically hit the ground and survey the land acre by acre. It can involve trudging through the woods with hiking boots or snowshoes, looking for gaps in the forest canopy that need restoring. But this summer, the Nature Conservancy’s Minnesota branch found an easier way to survey the large swaths of forest that comprise some of the over 60,000 acres it manages in the state.   The conservancy began using a drone to aid its reforestation e...

There are many thoughts and theories on why people are seeing great whites more often in places like California, and outside of there being an actual uptick in shark population, it makes sense that technology has simply made us more aware of them.   When it comes to tracking animals like great whites, researchers have employed different methods but mainly rely on tagging and tracking the movements of specific individuals. Of course, this limits data to only the animals that have had interaction ...

A UCLA student-led study found that drones can be used to determine whether ships are following pollution regulations. The drones could help enforce air pollution requirements by examining ships’ emissions through a sensor package, according to the study, which was published in August. Specifically, the drones would check if cargo ships are burning clean fuel – fuel which has a maximum of 0.1% sulfur concentration. The sensor package is similar in shape to a box, said Anthony Rosas, a recent UCL...

Terra Drone Angola has successfully demonstrated how drones can be used as a surveillance and reconnaissance tool for oil spill incidents. The pilot project, at an offshore oil field in Angola, was conducted for a major oil and gas operator in West Africa. Offshore oil spills are a cause of great concern due to economic losses and their adverse impact on the environment and marine ecosystem. To launch an effective response to oil spills, rapid preliminary survey assessments are necessary, and ac...

Founded in Malaysia in 2010 by Anuar Abdullah, Ocean Quest Global is an environmental organization at work in seven countries through Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. After years of research, Ocean Quest has created its own techniques, methodology and material for coral reef rehabilitation, which are based on the idea that coral can be restored on a large scale, in an all-natural and non-invasive way. The organization is actively adopting new technology to greatly speed-up the process, and a...

Following up with a study we featured last year, the results are now in; and the new study reveals that reef manta rays form social relationships and actively choose their social partners. Research published by scientists from the Marine Megafauna Foundation, Macquarie University, the University of Papua, and the University of York is the first to describe the structure of social relationships in manta rays. To identify social structures, the researchers used aerial drones and underwater cameras...

The Albert Thinkers, a team of four Year 5 pupils from St Albert the Great College, Valletta (Malta), have come up with the idea of developing a drone-like robot to tackle the problems of illegal hunting and trampling of vegetation in nature reserves. The project started when the pupils decided to focus on the problem of air pollution and what could be done to reduce it. They soon realised that the answer has been with us for millennia; trees! Their thought process then shifted to the local envi...

The federal government has adopted strict new regulations to govern the use of drones in Canadian airspace — prohibiting them from flying near airports and emergency scenes and ensuring that those operating them aren't drunk or high on drugs. Transport Minister Marc Garneau is set to formally announce the new rules for remotely piloted aircraft systems at a news conference in Montreal on Wednesday. A copy of the new regulations obtained by CBC News reveals that they are comprehensive. They...

A number of different companies are working on autonomous vehicles, but only a handful have shown lighting systems designed to communicate with pedestrians and other road users. That group is expanding today as Hyundai MOBIS has introduced its new Communication Lighting concept at CES. Essentially a futuristic coupe, the streamlined autonomous vehicle has been equipped with an assortment of displays and lights that communicate its intentions. The headlights are particularly interesting as ...
